I am fascinated by microbiome research because of its tremendous potential for our understanding and improvement of human health.
Recent findings have demonstrated how big is the importance of the relationship between the microbes that inhabit our bodies and our wellbeing, resistance against disease and response to medical treatments.
Our research group at the APC Microbiome Ireland is currently studying how the microbiome can affect the presence/abundance of certain molecules in the gut and how that, in turn, can alter our susceptibility to infection with a dangerous bacterium called Listeria, that causes the foodborne disease listeriosis.
