About World Microbiome Day

On World Microbiome Day we celebrate all things microbial, all around the world. We introduce international microbiome researchers and microbiome‐literate professionals to the public to raise awareness of the vibrant and diverse world of microbes and we invite the public and industry professionals to share their thoughts and activities with the microbiome community. On 27 June each year, we all come together to share our passion and knowledge about microbiomes and their value to humanity and the planet.
Microorganisms (also called microbes, including bacteria, fungi, viruses, archaea, etc.) are pretty much everywhere. Even though they are usually invisible to the naked eye, they live in and on plants, animals, water, soil, food and humans. Within each of those habitats, microorganisms form communities called ‘microbiomes’.
Microbiomes have many essential functions in the environments they live in. Researchers are uncovering more and more about what they do, and why this is so important to maintain the balance and health of their environment. For example, trillions of microorganisms live in and on our body (skin, mouth, lungs, intestines,…) where they actively help protect us from infections by fighting off bad bacteria, among other things. They also help us digest food, and produce vitamins and hormones that are essential for our health. Microbiomes can also be found in the soil, where they help plants to grow. They do this by fixing nitrogen – a gas from the atmosphere – in the soil and converting it into a form that plants can use for growth. Microbiomes of the ocean produce most of the oxygen we breathe and can absorb as much carbon dioxide as plants on land.
Together microbiomes are actively contributing to clean environments, sustaining food systems, mitigating climate change and keeping people healthy. Therefore, we invite you to participate in World Microbiome Day and help us increase microbiome literacy in society.

Sponsorship Opportunities

Support us to celebrate and raise public awareness of the vibrant and diverse world microbes on World Microbiome day!
Since its inception in 2018, World Microbiome Day events have taken place on all continents and reached global audiences online through website and social media channels.
Sponsoring World Microbiome Day gives you the opportunity to target a global audience (from the general public to researchers) and to improve your recognition worldwide.
Sponsorship helps amplify our message to raise awareness of the importance of microbial diversity and through our actions to sustain and increase the diversity of microbes in humans, animals, soils and water throughout our world for the future of our planet.

FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers
World Microbiome Day was launched by APC Microbiome Ireland just last year! In 2019, APC Microbiome Ireland is supported by the EU-funded project MicrobiomeSupport and the European Food Information Council (EUFIC).
Microbes are very small organisms such as bacteria, fungi and viruses. A community of microbes is called a microbiome and these can be found in and on humans, animals, and everywhere in the environment.

The 2021 theme is ‘Sustainability’ with a focus on how microbes can contribute to a sustainable future. Despite their ubiquity and diversity, the importance of microbes for maintaining healthy global ecosystems is often overlooked. Microbes already have a tremendous effect on the health and balance of the environments we live in.
